No matter how old you get, it’s important to never let the child in you get lost somewhere between petrol increases and the price of avocados. We will find that as we get older, we tend to dress with less character and this is completely normal as most of our day to day lives does not permit ‘childish’ dressing. We start to take life way too seriously, we forget about the simpler things in life that make us happy and when we begin to embrace our inner child, feelings that were once suppressed become illuminated. Sometimes you will find that if you allow your inner child to surface, your style will gain a unique personality.

About this look

This has been one of my favourite looks so far. It’s so energetic and charismatic that you can’t help but feel whimsical and light on your feet. I’ve been quite the fan of ‘tonal-dressing’ and YES, I just made this phrase up – if it doesn’t already exist. Basically, dressing in a way that all your items are of the same shade or in the same colour spectrum. It’s honestly a lot easier for those who are not as good as matching various items of clothing together that are of different shades and patterns. Of course, the playful and child-like aspect comes into play with this Mickey Mouse crop which I am absolutely in-love with which adds an element of joyful colour to this grey-scale look. Finishing the look off with what I’m sure you have seen in many posts – my Nike sneakers that pretty much transforms any look into that casual-chic look. The entire look, besides the sneakers can be purchased at Topshop. One of my favourite stores!

About this Location

Many people may not know this but when shooting for my blog, finding the location is one of the most time consuming aspects of shooting. It’s not about finding a pretty wall and just shooting there. It’s about suiting a particular look to a certain location. Lisa spotted this beaut of a wall and we thought it would be fitting to shoot this look there and because my look is grey, this added a transition of colour which was the ideal setting for this particular look. It just worked out so amazingly and made the photographs and BTS video that much better. You should definitely spend a little extra time to do your research to find an appropriate location.  This is one thing I’ve always taken pride in when taking my pictures because I want to give my readers quality content.

About this look

I think that along with the Cape Town Bipolar weather lately, this outfit is perfect for a reasonably sunny day but you are still prepared if it storms which is likely to happen in Cape Town. I am literally wearing all my favourite purchases and what I love about it is that it can be worn in so many different ways. If you follow me on Instagram, then you would have noticed that I have recycled these items quite a few times. I decided to add this statement necklace because the look is reasonably simple and it matches the detailing of the belt amazingly. I have also been obsessed with my cape from Witchery. The perfect transition piece to Autumn. I think our outfits describe our relationship perfectly, simple with a bit of spice.

I don’t think there’s a better feeling than to walk hand in hand with your partner whilst feeling confident in what you’re wearing because as a couple you feed off each others energy instinctively. Let’s face it, everything looks better x2 so why not combine your creative-fashion juices with your significant other? A couple that looks good, feels good TOGETHER. It also creates a different kind of unity that is not of a competitive nature but rather one that continually grows and develops together. The nice thing about dressing fashionable with your partner is that they genuinely want you to look good. There is no underlying agenda that secretly doesn’t want you to look better than them as you would find in some ‘friendships’. If you have a friend that never wants you to look ‘better’ than them then this is not a friend, TRUST.

A true partner would also want you to always look your best and not want to dull your shine in the fear that others will find you appealing. If this is the case then an insecure partner can only lead to unnecessary fights and paranoia. On a side note, I believe that couples can complement eachother but I’ve never been the type to dress exactly like my partner. I think that you can extract some elements from your partners outfit but you should still stand as individuals in your personal style and preferences without eclipsing the other.

If your partner doesn’t really have a sense of style then here a few tips that could help with this ‘situation’.

Fit is Key

Whilst some guys don’t really care too much of the fit of a particular piece of clothing, it can truly make the world of a difference. With guys, it is not so much what you are wearing but more so ‘how’ you are wearing it.

Don’t change him

Whilst you are a fashionista and your man is not. Don’t treat him like a personal project and force him to wear something he is not really comfortable wearing. It’s normal for couples to ask for eachothers opinion when buying clothes so when the opportunity presents itself, instead of demanding what he should buy, rather use your knowledge to give your advice. It’s seldom that your partner will buy something they know you’re not really into because let’s face it, we want to look good for eachother. Naturally, over time he will find his own style along with your help.

Embrace your monster

If it so happens that your guy does find a love for fashion, don’t use this opportunity to become insecure or ask him ‘who he is trying to look good for’. YOU! He is trying to look good for you! So appreciate his efforts when he does try and don’t become jealous or insecure when he does start to take a little more pride in what he wears.

I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I enjoyed creating it. Please comment if you would like to see more of these posts.

DSC_2882 When I started blogging, I literally felt like more is MORE! Maybe it’s because I wasn’t fully confident or comfortable with myself yet. I felt that to be a great blogger, your outfits had to completely unattainable and people need to wonder where you got your clothes from but it was exactly the opposite. In fact, I’ve learned that all of the great bloggers share all their secrets and that’s what I’m going to start doing a lot more of. I will start to share fitness tips as well as skincare and makeup routines.

This t-shirt dress is a new favourite that I recently purchased from River Island. I love how subtly charismatic it is and is a statement piece all on its own. It’s hard for me to find a t-shirt dress that suits my figure so when I saw that this one was a bit longer at the back, I was overjoyed. It’s far more flattering for a curvy girl such as myself as opposed to wearing a straight-cut. It also allows for more movement and is far more comfortable and practical when on the move.

About this Look

I decided to accessorize by adding my bag from River Island that kind of matches the style of the t-shirt dress perfectly. Finished the look off with my basic heels from Forever New that pretty much goes with everything and they are super comfortable and practical. I’ve focussed more on buying basics lately because you can always play it up with a statement piece. This look is so versatile and can go from a day at the office to a night out with the girls. Just add a bold lip and you’re good to go. You can also wear this t-shirt with knee-high boots and a leather jacket for the Winter season ahead.

BACK TO BASICS

The biggest misconception people have when it comes to basics is that it is boring but it is a fast growing trend that combines style with comfort and this is a trend I’ve really taken liking to. The jogger is the perfect basic to add to your ‘must have basic’ list. It is ideal for the off-duty look and has a multi-dimensional aspect to it being practical and stylish. I love that this look has some kind of ‘boyish’ charm to it without losing its femininity by adding a pair of basic strap heels that every girl should have. I love how you can be ‘sloppy’ and still be fashionable at the same time because this look can easily turn into a lounge-worthy outfit. Let’s not forget that joggers are the perfect travelling companion if worn with a comfortable pair of sneakers and you easily throw on a pair of basic strap-heels when you land to arrive in style.

About this look

I decided to pair this plain-cropped tee with a jogger because the blue stripe adds an undeniable charm that would otherwise be absent if I had worn a plain black top. The subtle detail in the top adds character which makes this crop top another basic essential because it adds character to almost every ‘plain’ look. Paired with my strapped heels, this look is instantly elevated to a tasteful street style look.

Top 10 Basic Items Every Girl Should Own

  1. Plain White Tee – This wardrobe essential is a no brainer. Not only is is it versatile but is great for layering in any season.
  2. A Leather/Pleather Jacket – Depending on your preference, every girl should have this basic to dress up our moods and let’s face it, us ladies have a lot of those.
  3. A Stripped Tee – To add a bit of sophistication, a stripped tee is perfect for that effortlessly relaxed, chic and minimalistic look.
  4. Jogger – A jogger is perfect for that slouchy yet fashionable look.
  5. Comfortable Denims – If a woman has a pair of jeans that she feels she looks amazing in then she can truly accomplish anything – need I say more?
  6. A Little Black Dress – This is perfect if you want to look good but don’t have enough time to troll through your wardrobe. It is essential that the cut is right on you and it also provides a clean slate for accessorizing however you want.
  7. Sunglasses – I don’t think there’s anything wrong with spending on a quality pair of sunglasses. Aviators are the perfect basic to invest in.
  8. Black Strap Heels – A strap heel can really elevate any look and a comfortable pair is truly essential.
  9. Statement Necklace – Although this isn’t really a ‘basic’, it can help to transform any basic look into a basic look with a little bit of extra flair.
  10. Mens Inspired Watch – This is perfect to throw on with any outfit as it is timeless (excuse the pun) and can be used to casually dress up any outfit up.

JUMPING RIGHT INTO IT

DSC_2770

DSC_2785

For the longest time, I couldn’t wear white denims without feeling a tad bit insecure but this white-denim dungaree from Cotton On is perfect if you want to slowly transition into wearing white denims without jumping right into it. See what I did there? This denim is the right dose of stretch which doesn’t leave it clinging to your thighs and bum which is what most girls are afraid of when purchasing white denims.  If you have been reading my last few blog posts, then you would have noticed that I am a big fan of dungarees. I love how whimsical and comfortable they are and for some reason, if you see a girl in a dungaree, it just screams some sort of minimalistic confidence.

Do White RIGHT – Tips For Rocking White Denims

  • Fit always matters when buying the right pair of white denims. Make sure that it is not too loose or not too tight.
  • Always wear seamless/nude underwear. I have fallen victim to wearing brightly coloured underwear with white denims time and time again.
  • Maintain your white denims by ALWAYS following the instructions on the care label unless you want to end up with a lovely cream denim. I must admit that my mistakes by not following the care label instructions has left me with one very unique pair of cream denims which I love!
  • Always be confident when wearing white denims. If you’re going to constantly be overthinking the width of your thighs and bum in those jeans then rather rock a plaid shirt wrapped around your waist or a trench coat. The transition to white denims isn’t always easy so take it in small steps.
  • If you’re in the changing room and cant decide immediately whether a pair of jeans looks good then rather don’t get it. You will always know immediately if a denim looks good on you or not.
  • BE CONFIDENT.

About this look:

I thought I would keep it classic by pairing a stripped-tee bodysuit with this dungaree and instead of opting for a pair of heels, I thought that this dungaree was better suited for a comfortable pair of sneakers and why not break this whole look up with a playful hat which adds the right dose of playfulness to my look. This look is perfect for a day date or if you’re looking to run errands in style and will having you rocking white denims like a pro.

BLACK IS THE NEW BLACK

I always told myself that I would never be one of those people that wear all-black ensembles on a regular but more often than not, I find myself plucking black items from my closet. Not only is black mysterious but it is extremely sexy.If you’re not comfortable wearing all-black then try colour popping either with a bright lipstick, jewellery or nail polish. Another thing I love about wearing all-black is that you can recycle your items more often than any other colour and actually end up saving money. The days of being ’emo’ when wearing all-black are long gone so instead of thinking that you’re bland if you wear black, embrace your inner fierceness and you never have to worry about going out of style because black is ALWAYS in.

About this look:

These pleather leggings go with EVERYTHING and its versatility is truly endless. I think it’s always good, especially if you have curves such as myself, to throw on a cape and the cape also pulls the whole outfit together. The cape also adds an element of drama which is subtly excused when wearing an all-black outfit, making it appear effortlessly chic. Need I say more?

SHAKE IT OFF

Lisa Gabriel Photography

DSC_0698 DSC_0743

Another week has gone by and I’ve managed to maintain a mindset that has gotten me through some really stressful moments. I have been juggling so much lately that it almost seems impossible to remain positive. I am in the business of motivating people whether it be through fashion, dance and ultimately the way they perceive themselves which is why it is so important that I practice what I preach. It would make absolutely no sense for me to preach self-confidence and positivity if I myself am lacking in that field.

When I find myself feeling low or doubtful, I remind myself of all the things I am instead of lingering on what I ‘think’ is a negative trait. Sometimes those negatives can be turned into positives just as quickly as your mind disillusioned those traits into negatives in the first place. It helps to surround yourself with those who believe in your goals and do activities that enriches your soul. If you follow me on Instagram then you would know that I did a sunrise hike up Lions Head this week and I can tell you that if ever you need clarification,  take a peak at mother nature.

About this look:

To go along with my semi – ‘calm’ way of dealing with life, I think this look is the right dose of casual-chic. You could just as easily throw on a pair of sneakers as you would a pair of heels, making this look super versatile. Although this look has a semi-boyish charm to it, it still remains feminine so let’s just say that any ‘cool’ girl can rock this outfit. I have also been eyeing this tasseled- jacket for quite some time so I just had to share it with my readers. There is so much you could actually do with this look but this is my interpretation. Email me with your thoughts, I would love to be in touch and hear from my readers. What would your interpretation be?

ME AND MY DUNGAREE

DSC_0663

Lisa Gabriel photography

DSC_0639

Lindy Lins makeup

This dungaree is the most comfortable and practical thing I have gotten in a while. It’s nice to ditch the skin-tight jeans and resurrect some childhood staples. A few posts back, I rocked a skin-tight dungaree whilst this post showcases the more classic version of the dungaree and personally, classic is aways best. I love how many versions of the dungaree there actually is making it almost impossible for you to miss this trend. The one thing that I love is that it can be rocked both in Summer and Winter in different variations according to personal preference. I am quite schizophrenic when it comes to my style, I would wear this dungaree with a pair of sneakers and a pair of heels. It all depends on my mood on the day.

About this look:

As you might have gathered, I chose to style this look in the more ‘girly’ fashion whilst straying away from the typical. There is a very close association between ‘girly’ and ‘typical’. This is why I have opted to pair this dungaree with a beautiful light-dusty pink polar neck. I stuck to the same colour concept when choosing a shoe. I chose to wear heels because I am quite curvy around the hips and because this dungaree is quite baggy, I wanted to add some length and not look like I was drowning.

Introduction to BOOTYFULL

As some of you have seen that follow my social media pages, myself and professional choreographer have joined forces to create the ultimate confidence-builder and dance class for women. It’s a concept that materialised when I was looking for hip hop classes but not the generic type – the type that can make me feel sexy whilst working up a sweat. I did my first class with Courtney and posted a video on Instagram. I then suggested for us to take this a step further and start classes. Courtney and I developed the concept and together, materialised it into something amazing and something that had been lying dormant for so long – A class for women that builds their confidence through dance and other confidence-builder exercises. Aside from the massive mirror keeping us motivated, these ladies genuinely feel better about themselves when they leave our classes both mentally and physically and that alone keeps us motivated.

We are only in our fourth week and have done a radio interview and generated sponsorship. This is only the beginning and we are so excited for this venture. I will have a section of my blog dedicated the BOOTYFULL workshop with all the information really soon.  With Courtney being a master of his craft, we make a great team – better than either one of us could have ever anticipated and this is only the beginning.

TIME TO CHANGE

DSC_0418

Lindy Lins makeup

DSC_0454

Lisa Gabriel photography

I’ve been going through so many changes lately but then again, change is the one constant thing in life. Some changes we embrace whilst some changes, we fear but things don’t remain the same no matter how much we would like them to. I have always been the type of person to embrace change. Some of you may have noticed that I cut my hair and I can honestly say that it is the most liberating thing I have ever done. It forced me to embrace a beauty I never knew existed before I removed my mask and stepped out of my comfort zone. My style is also always under constant construction. I never stick to one specific style because I believe that in order to evolve, one must be willing to change and that refers to all facets of life.

About this Look:

Along with my new cut, my style has changed slightly. I find myself gearing my attention to the more minimalistic way of dressing and foe me that’s something ‘different’. I’m usually one to be flamboyant and loud with my style but lately, I’ve found that it’s not necessarily  what you wear but how confident you feel when wearing it. I always felt the need to be noticed or the more ‘unusual’ I dressed, the ‘cooler’ I’ll be but secretly, I’d feel uncomfortable. This dress is so cute and perfect for a night out with the girls or can be worn to the office. It’s appropriate for almost every occasion and is very ‘clueless’. I added a bit of edge by throwing on a leather jacket. A good leather jacket can go with almost EVERYTHING! These lace-up block heels adds something extra by just making this look scream minimalistic – chic. I always love a good pair of practical heels because us gals love comfort and these block heels are perfect for the girl that wants to be stylish and comfortable.

Let's talk Lookbook Street style

DONE DID IT

IMG_3607

Shelflife peak, Forever 21 body-suit, Topshop skirt, Sportscene sneakers

I became motivated by these images to write this blog post because when one thinks about Nike, you automatically think, ‘Just Do It’ and with every year that goes by, I feel like I could have accomplished more but I intend to change that this year. The trick is to ALWAYS keep a positive state of mind, even when something shitty happens. This starts by surrounding yourself with those who support your visions and your goals and letting go of those who do nothing but cast a shadow on your light. I like to keep my circles small, not that I’m not open to meeting new people but because I’ve been burned too many times by caring too much about the opinions of others and compromising my personality trying to satisfy others. One of the best ways to work on personal development is to change your outlook on life and over time develop an attitude that is stable and conscious.

I know that some of my readers feel stagnant and are currently in a state of limbo when it comes to progression in their lives. We have all been there and sometimes I feel like I have no clear direction or path or things are moving slowly but when I talk to others, I always get congratulated on my progress. So why don’t I congratulate myself? The trick is to acknowledge your achievements but not congratulate yourself too much because I find that one becomes comfortable, the process of progression takes longer. Stop blaming others for the problem. The natural reaction as human beings when there is a reversal of any kind is to blame someone else. Sometimes you cant control what happens to you but you can control your reaction towards it and when things go south, everyone is watching you to see how you behave and your reaction also determines how people feel about you.

One of the ways in which I have started to take over my mind and my thoughts is to read. I always use to love reading but as social media started to take over, the only thing I have been reading lately are hashtags. Feed your mind and use your imagination. By reading, you gain perspective and the ability to think differently and in doing so, you’re actually feeding your mind something nutritious. To change your life, it all starts with the mind. Just some food for thought.

About this Look:

I’ve always been a sneaker gal and you would know this if you followed my social media accounts in the earlier days. There’s something about sneakers that allow you to be yourself, confident and relaxed. I feel I can accomplish more in a day if I feel comfortable and sneakers always allow me that comfort. These particular pair of sneakers have a thick base so it gives me some height too so when wearing with a pencil skirt, I don’t feel, as I would say, ‘dumpy’. I also love to my match my sneakers with a piece of clothing I’m wearing and in this case, it’s the skirt. Sometimes it can be cheesy to do this but I just find that it ties the whole look together. Paired with a grey NY peak and striped body suit, it creates the ultimate casual-chic look.
